Richardson Milling Whole Grain Oat Groats are produced by cleaning, dehulling, and kiln toasting high quality raw oats. The kilning process protects the groats from rancidity, imparts a toasted flavor while enhancing functionality. Groats can be reduced in size through a process using steel cutting blades resulting in Steel Cut Oat Groats.

Both Whole and Steel Cut groats can be flaked to produce a wide variety of whole oat flakes to meet specific customer requirements. Bulk Whole Oat Groats can be shipped internationally and processed into flakes in markets that do not grow oats.

Richardson Milling Whole Grain Oat Flakes are produced by flaking either whole or steel cut groats. Large flakes (or Old Fashioned) are produced from whole oat groats while Quick and Instant Flakes are produced from steel cut oat groats.

Richardson Milling Whole Grain Oat Flour is typically made by grinding and sifting kilned groats. Utilizing oat flakes as a source for grinding can alter the functional characteristics of the flour.
Richardson Milling Oat Bran is manufactured according to the AACC¹ definition which has been adopted by the FDA for the purpose of the 1997 oat soluble fiber health claim. Through our milling technology and raw material selection, we are able to target beta-glucan levels that enable customers to more effectively make health claims.

Richardson Milling Toasted Coated Grains are flaked grains enrobed with a syrup and toasted to a specific moisture content. Our most popular product uses oat flakes but we also formulate with other cereal grains, including ancient grains.

Our processing method enables us minimize “clusters” and provide a free flowing product highlighting the whole grain flake. Product applications include a “base” for chewy granola bars, simple ingredient granola, trail mixes, toppings for bakery and yogurt products.

We have invested significantly into our operations to provide flexibility while ensuring the highest food safety standards. Allergen control is a priority and our systems our built to address this concern. Peanuts, however, are not processed in our operations.

Richardson Milling is a major miller of organic oats and supplies products both in North America and internationally. Northern Alberta is seeing strong growth of organic oat production which is our primary sourcing region for our Barrhead, Alberta plant. Barrhead supplies organic Steel Cut Groats, Flakes (Large and Quick), Whole Oat Flour and Oat Bran.

Our South Sioux City, Nebraska facility is certified organic for coated and cluster production and could be a secondary facility for organic milled oat products.
