Grain marketing

Richardson Pioneer has the country’s most efficient network of high-throughput elevators, with 55 locations across Western Canada. Every year, we handle 14 to 16 million tonnes of locally-sourced grains, oilseeds, and other crops to meet growing global demand for quality Canadian commodities. Richardson Pioneer handles and markets:
  • Wheat
  • Durum
  • Canola
  • Oats
  • Barley
  • Soybeans
  • Corn
  • Flax
  • Lentils
  • Peas

With expertise in merchandising and international trading offices, we closely monitor customer needs and analyze commodity markets for well-timed selling opportunities.

Contracting Tools

Richardson Pioneer offers a variety of contracting tools and options to help customers determine the right contract and timing to market their grain.

Using these contracting tools, we can help:

  • Manage grain storage by scheduling deliveries to a terminal for a specified period. This helps manage space issues and quality risk.
  • Manage return on investment by guaranteeing a minimum price for some or all of a crop.
  • Capitalize on market rallies and benefit from future price increases.
  • Manage cash flow by ensuring growers have it when they need it while allowing them to remain in the market to capture potential upside.
  • Avoid production shortfall risks associated with other cash grain delivery contracts.

Richardson International exports grains and oilseeds to more than 50 countries around the world. Our port terminal in North Vancouver is one of the world’s most efficient facilities, with a storage capacity of approximately 180,000 tonnes. Richardson has a 25 per cent ownership share in the Cascadia terminal, situated near Vancouver and is a partner in Prince Rupert Grain. These facilities are the three largest volume grain terminals in Canada.

In Eastern Canada, Richardson International handles and merchandises grain and serves eastern growers through our port terminal elevators in Hamilton, Ontario; Thunder Bay, Ontario; and Sorel, Québec.

Richardson Farms

We are committed to supporting farmers and promoting Canadian agriculture, and we believe research and education are essential to the growth and sustainability of our industry. Richardson Farms brings this belief to life.

Our research and demonstration farms – Kelburn Farm in Manitoba and Bennett Farm in Saskatchewan – is where we put the latest technologies and techniques to the test under real growing conditions. From assessing new crop protection products before they go to market, to using both large scale and small plots to identify differences in seed varieties, to applying 4R practices by incorporating pioneering fertilizer products and strategies, our drive for innovation means better service to our customers.

Learning on the Farm

Richardson is pleased to partner with organizations such as the Manitoba Canola Growers, Agriculture in the Classroom Manitoba, and Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan to provide opportunities for school children to learn about agriculture. Kelburn and Bennett Farms welcome thousands of kids every year for hands-on learning – often the first visit to farm for many children. These educational tours highlight sustainable farming practices and engage kids in learning about where their food comes from and the importance of farming in their home communities and around the world. We look forward to resuming school tours at Richardson Farms in the near future.
