Richardson and LNS Services Successfully Complete Construction on Port Terminal Conveyors

Richardson International engaged LNS Services — an industrial construction and maintenance contractor, to design, manufacture, and install four new and fully automated grain handling trippers at the North Vancouver port terminal facility. The equipment was developed to meet Richardson’s specific and unique operational requirements while maintaining ease of use for terminal personnel.

As one of the most successful grain handling facilities in the world, the North Vancouver terminal exports over five million metric tonnes of canola and cereal grains to countries along the Pacific Rim every year. In 2015, the terminal underwent an extensive expansion project – doubling its storage capacity to 180,000 metric tonnes and doubling railcar unloading capacity from 150 to 300 cars per day. Following the expansion, the terminal still required a more efficient tripper system than was originally installed at the facility in the 1970s. “To move these two remaining annexes into this century and to provide the terminal with significant improvements in efficiency and automation, we engaged LNS to manage this undertaking. Along with Richardson engineering, LNS engineering, and on-site expertise, this tripper project exceeded expectation on all levels,” said Phil Hulina (Senior Director, North Vancouver Port Terminal).

The new tripper conveyors feature modern mechanical structural components and chutes, electrical and automated control systems, and are equipped with dust collection aspiration. All upgrades incorporate innovative design solutions and the latest in industrial construction technologies. Together, the updates offer enhanced performance, capacity, efficiency, and safety.

With a longstanding history of successful project collaboration, Richardson and LNS Services anticipate the high functioning equipment will assist the terminal in continuing as a leading industry performer.
